Sabrina Carpenter Reflects on Her Disney Past and Current Identity

Sabrina Carpenter, known for her role on Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World, feels a strong disconnect from her Disney kid beginnings. In a candid interview with Variety, the singer and actress shared her thoughts on how her image has evolved since her days on the popular TV show.

A New Identity Beyond Disney

Sabrina Carpenter, now a successful singer with several albums under her belt, expressed that she feels far removed from her Disney past. “I’m 900 inappropriate jokes away from being a Disney actor, but people still see me that way,” she told Variety. Despite her current success in music, Carpenter acknowledges that many still associate her with her teenage roles. However, she hasn’t felt the need to make drastic changes to distance herself from her Disney image, possibly because Girl Meets World aired during a time of lower viewership for Disney Channel.

Carpenter, who starred in Girl Meets World for 72 episodes, shared, “I’m always extremely flattered to be grouped in with the other women and girls who I’ve idolized and looked up to who came from that, but I feel very distant from it.” This sentiment reflects her appreciation for her Disney peers while also emphasizing her personal growth and change in identity since those days.

Evolving as an Artist

With five albums already released and a sixth on the way, Carpenter has established herself as a prominent figure in the music industry. She believes that her earlier work should be viewed separately from her current creative output, attributing this to her evolution as a person and artist. “For the people who love those early records and listen to them, I love you for that,” she said. “But I personally feel a sense of separation from them, largely due to the shift in who I am as a person and as an artist, pre-pandemic and post-pandemic.”

Carpenter’s musical journey showcases her development and maturity over the years, highlighting her ability to reinvent herself while maintaining a connection with her loyal fan base. Her upcoming album, Short n’ Sweet, is set to release on August 23, promising to further showcase her growth as an artist.

Balancing Acting and Music

Despite her success in music, Carpenter hasn’t entirely left acting behind. She referred to her break from movies and TV as an “unwarranted break” and mentioned that she continues to review scripts for potential projects. However, she noted a recurring issue with the roles offered to her: “A lot of them sound like five other already released movies.”

Carpenter’s extensive acting portfolio includes not only Disney projects like Phineas and Ferb, Austin & Ally, and Sofia the First, but also significant roles in films such as The Hate U Give, Work It, and Netflix’s Tall Girl movies. Her diverse experience in both acting and music highlights her versatility and dedication to her craft.

As Sabrina Carpenter continues to evolve and explore new creative avenues, she remains a dynamic force in the entertainment industry, far beyond her Disney beginnings.
