Box Office Update: Alien: Romulus Tops Deadpool & Wolverine, It Ends With Us Continues Strong Run

The reign of Deadpool & Wolverine at the box office has officially ended after three record-breaking weeks. The dynamic duo has been dethroned by the latest entry in the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus. Directed by Fede Álvarez, the sci-fi horror film raked in an impressive $41.5 million domestically in its opening weekend, with an additional $66.7 million internationally, bringing its global total to $108.2 million.

Set between the events of the original Alien (1979) and its sequel Aliens (1986), Alien: Romulus follows a group of young space colonizers who encounter the iconic Xenomorph in the eerie confines of a derelict space station. The film has received high praise, notably from Ridley Scott, the director of the original Alien, who commended Álvarez for his gripping continuation of the franchise.

Meanwhile, Deadpool & Wolverine slipped to the No. 2 spot, earning $29 million in its fourth weekend, bringing its domestic total to $545.8 million and its global earnings to a staggering $1.1 billion. The R-rated blockbuster has already made history as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

On the other end of the Reynolds-Lively spectrum, Blake Lively’s It Ends With Us continues to perform well, despite facing some controversy during its release. The romantic drama, based on the best-selling novel by Colleen Hoover, earned $24 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to $97.8 million and its worldwide gross to $180 million.

In its fifth week, Twisters continues to draw audiences, earning $9.8 million, which brings its domestic total to $238.4 million and a global take of $333.4 million.

Rounding out the top five is the 15th anniversary re-release of the beloved stop-motion animated film Coraline. The re-release grossed $8.6 million, a strong showing for the Neil Gaiman adaptation that originally debuted in 2009, highlighting the film’s enduring popularity.
