Keanu Reeves, the iconic star of The Matrix and John Wick series, recently stepped into an unexpected role by signing a one-day contract with the Windsor Spitfires, a junior hockey team in Ontario. The 59-year-old actor, who was a promising hockey prospect in his youth, revisited his love for the sport in a special event that also aimed to give back to the community.
During his visit, Reeves donned a Spitfires jersey and autographed several team-branded items that will be auctioned off to benefit the Windsor chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association. Although Reeves was born in Lebanon, he grew up in Toronto and holds Canadian citizenship, making this return to Canadian hockey particularly meaningful.
Reeves’ connection to hockey runs deep. As a teenager, he was a skilled player and even considered playing goalie for the Spitfires before deciding to pursue acting. Although stories vary on why he didn’t continue with hockey, it is clear that his passion for the sport persisted. In a 2013 Reddit AMA, Reeves revealed that after moving to California, he regularly participated in a street hockey game every weekend for over a decade.
Despite his talent on the ice, Reeves never seriously pursued a professional hockey career, preferring to keep the sport as a beloved pastime rather than a career path. This sentiment was echoed in a conversation with a former teammate, where Reeves explained that while he loved hockey, he never envisioned it as a full-time pursuit.
Reeves’ connection to hockey also extends to his acting career, with his first feature film role in 1986’s Youngblood, a hockey drama that starred Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze. Over the years, Reeves has starred in several sports-themed films, including The Replacements and Hardball, showcasing his versatility as an actor.
The charity hockey event is just one of many diverse projects Reeves is involved in. In addition to his extensive film career, he co-headlines a new Broadway production of Waiting for Godot, stars in the video game Cyberpunk 2077, plays bass in his band Dogstar, writes comics and novels, and owns a custom motorcycle company.
Fans can look forward to seeing Reeves in upcoming projects like Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the John Wick spinoff Ballerina, and the comedy Good Fortune directed by Aziz Ansari.
