Nicole Kidman on the Joy of Playing Batman’s Love Interest: ‘I Get to Kiss Batman!’

Nicole Kidman has always been known for her versatility as an actress, seamlessly transitioning between indie dramas and big-budget blockbusters. One of her most memorable roles was in the 1995 superhero film Batman Forever, where she played Dr. Chase Meridian, the love interest of Bruce Wayne, portrayed by Val Kilmer.

In a recent interview with L’Officiel, Kidman reflected on why she took on the role, offering a light-hearted reason that resonates with fans: “Everyone’s like, ‘Why are you doing that?'” she said. “I’m like, ‘Because I get to kiss Batman!'”

Kidman’s portrayal of Dr. Meridian came during an era when superhero films were finding their footing as major Hollywood blockbusters. Directed by Joel Schumacher and produced by Tim Burton, Batman Forever was a colorful and dynamic entry in the Batman saga, featuring an ensemble cast that included Jim Carrey as the Riddler, Tommy Lee Jones as Harvey Dent, Drew Barrymore as Sugar, and Chris O’Donnell as Robin.

Despite the film’s commercial success, some have questioned why a serious actress like Kidman would choose to participate in such mainstream fare. Kidman addressed this, stating, “The thing people don’t understand is, it’s not about the check. A lot of the mainstream big blockbusters that I do are hopefully different.”

Kidman’s career is indeed marked by a wide range of roles. From her Oscar-winning performance in The Hours to her portrayal of Aquaman’s mother in the 2018 DC blockbuster Aquaman, she has proven her ability to navigate both the indie and blockbuster worlds. Kidman returned to the superhero genre in 2023 for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

In addition to her film work, Kidman has also made significant strides in television, earning an Emmy Award for her role in Big Little Lies and receiving acclaim for her performances in Top of the Lake and The Undoing.

Up next, Kidman stars in the Netflix miniseries The Perfect Couple, a murder mystery set at a lavish wedding in Nantucket. She plays Greer Garrison Winbury, a famous novelist and the groom’s mother. The series, which also stars Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, and Dakota Fanning, is set to start streaming on September 5.
