The actor called the president’s decision “the most selfless thing that anybody’s done since George Washington” at a Venice screening for his new film “Wolfs.”
George Clooney has spoken out in strong support of President Joe Biden‘s decision to step aside as the Democratic nominee in the 2024 presidential race. The Oscar-winning actor, who had previously penned an op-ed urging Biden to consider passing the torch, praised the president’s choice as an act of unparalleled selflessness.
Clooney’s comments came during a press screening of his latest film, Wolfs, at the Venice Film Festival. When asked about his earlier essay, the audience erupted in applause, but Clooney redirected the praise: “The person who should be applauded is the president, who did the most selfless thing that anybody’s done since George Washington.”
A Historic Decision
Earlier this summer, Clooney had been one of several prominent figures urging Biden to reconsider his re-election bid. In a July 10 op-ed titled “I Love Joe Biden, but We Need a New Nominee,” published in The New York Times, Clooney expressed concerns about the president’s ability to lead the Democratic Party to victory in the upcoming election.
“The Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe ‘big f—ing deal’ Biden of 2010,” Clooney wrote, referencing a moment from Biden’s earlier political career. “He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate.” Clooney’s concerns centered around the president’s age and his performance in recent public appearances.
Biden’s Endorsement of Kamala Harris
Following Biden’s decision to bow out of the race, he threw his full support behind Vice President Kamala Harris, endorsing her as the Democratic nominee for the 2024 election. Biden stated in his announcement, “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my vice president. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year.”
Clooney echoed Biden’s sentiment, expressing confidence in Harris and the future of the Democratic Party. “All the machinations that got us there, none of that’s gonna be remembered and it shouldn’t be,” Clooney said. “What should be remembered is the selfless act of someone who… You know, it’s very hard to let go of power. We know that. We’ve seen it all around the world. And for someone to say, ‘I think there’s a better way forward,’ all the credit goes to him.”
Looking Ahead
As the world watches the unfolding 2024 presidential race, Clooney’s words reflect a sense of optimism for the future. He acknowledged the concerns that many had about Biden’s re-election campaign but emphasized that the president’s decision to step aside will be the defining moment remembered in history.
“I’m just very proud of where we are in the state of the world right now, which I think many people are surprised by, and I think we’re all very excited by the future,” Clooney concluded at the Venice press conference.
With Harris now at the helm of the Democratic campaign, backed by Biden and his endorsement of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, the party is gearing up for what promises to be a pivotal election season.
