Reynolds vs. Lively: Deadpool & Wolverine Surpasses $1 Billion Globally, Edging Out It Ends With Us

In the Reynolds-Lively household, competition has never been hotter as both Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have struck box office gold. This past weekend, the couple’s respective films—Deadpool & Wolverine and It Ends with Us—dominated the global box office, with each film achieving significant milestones.

Box Office Breakdown: Who Came Out on Top?

After a three-week streak, Deadpool & Wolverine continues to draw massive audiences, earning an estimated $54 million domestically over the weekend. This brings the film’s domestic total to $494 million, according to Comscore. But the real achievement lies in the film’s global performance, where it has now surpassed the coveted $1 billion mark. This makes it the second film of 2024 to achieve such success, following Pixar’s Inside Out 2.

Meanwhile, Blake Lively’s It Ends with Us, an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, made an impressive debut by bringing in $50 million domestically, far exceeding initial projections. The film also performed well internationally, adding another $30 million to its total for a worldwide opening of $80 million.

While Deadpool & Wolverine slightly edged out It Ends with Us in box office earnings, both films are undeniable hits, making it a lucrative month for the power couple.

Behind the Scenes: A Collaborative Effort

Beyond the numbers, the collaboration between Lively and Reynolds goes deeper. Lively recently revealed that her husband played a key role in crafting the fan-favorite rooftop scene in It Ends with Us, where her character, Lily Bloom, first meets neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid. Meanwhile, Lively made a cameo appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine as a female variant of Reynolds’ character, sharing the screen briefly with their daughters, Inez and Olin.

“He works on everything I do,” Lively shared with E! News. “I work on everything he does. So his wins, his celebrations are mine, and mine are his.”

Summer Box Office Roundup

While the Lively-Reynolds competition has taken center stage, other films are making waves this summer. Twisters, starring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos, continues its successful run, adding another $15 million to its domestic tally of $222 million, with a global total of $310 million after four weeks in theaters.

On the other hand, Borderlands, a highly anticipated adaptation of the hit video game series, suffered a disappointing debut with $8.8 million domestically and $16.5 million globally. Directed by Eli Roth and featuring a star-studded cast including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black, the film’s underperformance has surprised many, given the hype surrounding its release.

Rounding out the top five, Despicable Me 4 continues to hold strong, bringing in an additional $8 million in its sixth week. The film, part of Illumination’s hit franchise, has earned $330 million domestically and an impressive $807 million globally.

The Verdict

As Deadpool & Wolverine and It Ends with Us continue to draw crowds, the real winners are the fans, who get to witness both sides of this Hollywood power couple excel on the big screen. Whether you’re into superhero antics or heartfelt drama, there’s something for everyone this summer, and the Reynolds-Lively rivalry only adds to the excitement.
